When I booked my work trip to New Mexico, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from Hilton Santa Fe Buffalo Thunder. I knew it would be a convenient place to stay, but I didn’t expect it to become one of the highlights of the trip.

After long days of meetings, exploring Santa Fe, and taking in the incredible New Mexico scenery, it became the perfect place to unwind, recharge, and slow down for a bit.

Some places are simply a place to sleep. Others earn a return visit.

This is absolutely one of them.

Some hotels are simply a place to sleep. Others become part of the experience. Hilton Santa Fe Buffalo Thunder was definitely the latter.

After spending time exploring Santa Fe and northern New Mexico, I couldn’t have picked a better home base for the adventure.

What is Hilton Santa Fe Buffalo Thunder?

When I booked my stay at Hilton Santa Fe Buffalo Thunder, I expected a comfortable hotel and a convenient place to stay during my New Mexico trip. What I found was much more than that.

Nestled beneath the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the resort feels like a destination all by itself. Between the incredible views, spacious grounds, and relaxing atmosphere, it quickly became one of my favorite parts of the trip.

One of the things I appreciated most about staying here was the location. The resort is just 15 minutes from Santa Fe’s Historic Plaza, making it easy to explore the city during the day while still returning to a quieter, more relaxing setting each evening.

The Room: Two Fireplaces and the Biggest Bathroom I’ve Ever Seen

Let me paint you a picture of our suite: a separate living room and bedroom, a patio with jaw-dropping mountain views, TWO working fireplaces, and a bathroom so enormous I genuinely stood there for a moment just taking it all in. I’ve stayed in a lot of hotels. I have never seen a bathroom like that.

I’ve stayed in a lot of hotels over the years, but this was one of those rooms that immediately made me think, “I could happily stay here for a week.”

What stood out most was how different the room felt from a typical hotel stay. The Native American-inspired décor, handcrafted furnishings, and mountain views gave the suite a warmth and character that made it feel connected to the surrounding landscape rather than just another hotel room.

We were on the 5th floor and the views from our patio were absolutely stunning — mountains in every direction, fresh New Mexico air, total peace and quiet. After a full day exploring Valles Caldera and Bandelier National Monument, sitting on that patio with a drink in hand while watching the sun dip behind the mountains felt like the perfect way to end the day.

One of the things that surprised me most about Buffalo Thunder was just how much there was to do without ever leaving the property. Whether you’re looking to relax, explore, dine, or simply enjoy the scenery, there’s a little something for everyone.

One of my favorite unexpected discoveries was the incredible Indigenous artwork displayed throughout the resort. Taking time to walk around and appreciate the pieces added another layer to the experience and made the property feel much more connected to the history and culture of the area.

Why I Love Staying Outside Downtown Santa Fe

One of my favorite things about Buffalo Thunder is its location. While many visitors choose to stay directly in downtown Santa Fe, I loved returning each evening to a quieter setting surrounded by mountain views and open space.

The drive into Santa Fe was easy, but coming back to the resort at the end of the day felt like a chance to slow down and truly relax.

For me, Buffalo Thunder offered the best of both worlds. We could spend the day exploring Santa Fe, hiking, and discovering new places, then return each evening to a quieter, more relaxed setting surrounded by mountain views.

During our trip we ate at the incredible Tesuque Village Market — a Santa Fe gem that deserves its own blog post — and every evening the drive back to Buffalo Thunder felt like returning to a sanctuary.

This is the part that makes Buffalo Thunder extra special for outdoor adventurers: its location is ideal for exploring northern New Mexico’s incredible parks.

• 🏔️ Bandelier National Monument — about 35 minutes away
• 🏙️ Historic Santa Fe Plaza — 15 minutes away

We used Buffalo Thunder as our home base for both park days, and it worked perfectly. We’d return exhausted from hiking, clean up in that glorious bathroom, enjoy a great dinner, and get ready to do it all again the next day.
