Bandelier National Monument: Climbing Into Ancient Cliff Dwellings in New Mexico

After a snowy, windswept morning at Valles Caldera, Jason and I weren’t sure what to expect from our afternoon at Bandelier National Monument. What we found was one of the most unique and memorable experiences of our entire New Mexico trip — ancient cliff dwellings carved into volcanic rock, wooden ladders leading up to caves where people actually lived 800 years ago, and a striking landscape unlike anything we’d ever seen.

All in the same afternoon. New Mexico really doesn’t mess around.

What is Bandelier National Monument?

Bandelier protects the ancestral homeland of the Pueblo people, who carved homes directly into the soft volcanic tuff cliffs of Frijoles Canyon centuries ago. Today visitors can walk the Main Loop Trail through the canyon, peer into ancient rooms, and yes — actually climb wooden ladders up into the cliff dwellings themselves.

Your America the Beautiful pass covers entry here too! Two national parks, one day, zero admission fees. 🎫

The Temperature Surprise

One of the funniest parts of our day: we went from snowy Valles Caldera in the morning to a completely different world at Bandelier in the afternoon. Bandelier sits lower in elevation and felt dramatically warmer — we were peeling off layers within minutes of arriving.

New Mexico in late April is basically a weather adventure in itself.

The Main Loop Trail: Don’t Skip the Ladders

The Main Loop Trail at Bandelier is about 1.5 miles and absolutely manageable for most fitness levels. But the highlight — the moment that makes the whole trip worth it — is climbing the wooden ladders up into the actual cliff dwellings.

We climbed up and stood inside caves where the Ancestral Pueblo people lived, cooked, and raised families centuries ago. The contrast of the soft cream-colored cliffs against the surrounding mountains and canyon was genuinely breathtaking. It’s one of those experiences where you just stand there thinking about how small you are in the grand scheme of history.

If you’re even slightly hesitant about the ladders — do it anyway. It’s completely worth it and the ladders are sturdy and well maintained.

Practical Details That Made Our Visit Easy

One thing that stood out about Bandelier was how well run and clean the park was. The facilities were excellent and the on-site cafe was a welcome surprise after our picnic-in-the-cold morning at Valles Caldera. We had a great lunch there and highly recommend budgeting time for it.

The visitor center is also excellent — worth a stop before hitting the trail to understand the history of what you’re about to see.

Tips Before You Go

  • 🎫 America the Beautiful pass — free entry!
  • 🪜 Climb the ladders — don’t chicken out, you’ll regret it if you skip them
  • 🍽️ Eat at the on-site cafe — surprisingly good and very convenient
  • 🌡️ Dress in layers — especially if combining with Valles Caldera in the same day
  • 🥾 Sturdy hiking boots are essential for the Main Loop Trail — I wore my Columbia Hiking Boots and they were perfect for the rocky terrain and ladder climbing!
  • 🎒 Pack light but smart for the Main Loop Trail — my Osprey Daylite Hiking Backpack fits everything I need for a half day at Bandelier including layers, water and snacks!
  • Give yourself at least 2-3 hours — the Main Loop is short but you’ll want time to explore
  • 🚗 Combine with Valles Caldera — about 45 minutes apart, perfect full day from Santa Fe
  • 📱 Download the NPS app — great trail maps and park information

The Perfect New Mexico Day Trip Combo

Valles Caldera in the morning, Bandelier in the afternoon, dinner in Santa Fe — that’s honestly one of the best days you can have in New Mexico. Both parks are dramatically different in landscape and experience, which makes them perfect companions.

We were staying at the stunning Buffalo Thunder Resort in Santa Fe which made the perfect home base for exploring — but that’s a story for another post! 😊
