Peters Mountain to Clarks Ferry Trailhead: A Stunning Appalachian Trail Hike
The Peters Mountain to Clarks Ferry Trailhead hike is one of the most scenic sections of the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania, combining forested trails, rocky outcroppings, wildlife sightings, and incredible views of the Susquehanna River. The Peters Mountain to Clarks Ferry Trailhead section is worth adding to your hiking list.
We completed this hike on a beautiful Saturday in late May and were rewarded with everything from peaceful wooded sections and Appalachian Trail landmarks to sweeping valley views. This hike turned out to be even more memorable than expected and quickly became one of my favorite Pennsylvania hiking experiences.

Getting to the Trailhead

We chose to shuttle vehicles for this hike. Before starting, we parked one vehicle near Clarks Ferry Trailhead and then drove to Peters Mountain Trailhead to begin the hike.
We arrived around 11:15 a.m. on a Saturday and grabbed the last available parking spot. If you’re planning this hike on a weekend, arriving early is highly recommended.
Starting the Hike

After parking, hikers cross a pedestrian bridge over Peters Mountain Road and quickly connect with the Appalachian Trail. The trail begins gently before gradually working its way toward several scenic viewpoints.
Following the Appalachian Trail

One of my favorite things about hiking the Appalachian Trail is following the iconic white blazes. Even if you’re new to the AT, these simple trail markers make navigation straightforward and help confirm you’re heading in the right direction.
What the Trail Is Really Like

Much of this hike winds through beautiful Pennsylvania forest. The trail is shaded for long stretches and offers a peaceful hiking experience with frequent reminders that you’re traveling along one of the most famous long-distance trails in the world.
While I would classify this hike as moderate, it felt slightly harder than I expected. Be prepared for uneven terrain and rocky sections throughout portions of the hike.
Pennsylvania’s “Rocksylvania”

Pennsylvania didn’t earn the nickname “Rocksylvania” by accident. Several sections of this hike feature significant rock formations and uneven footing. Proper hiking shoes or boots are highly recommended, especially if recent weather has left the trail slick.
Wildlife and Trail Highlights

One unexpected highlight was spotting a turkey vulture along the trail. Wildlife sightings always add something special to a hike and remind me to slow down and pay attention to what’s happening beyond the trail itself.
Clarks Ferry Shelter

One notable landmark along this section of the Appalachian Trail is the Clarks Ferry Shelter. The shelter includes signage directing hikers to a nearby spring and serves as a reminder of the trail’s long-distance hiking heritage.
The Views Make It Worth It

The Best View of the Day

The highlight of the hike was reaching an overlook with incredible views of the Susquehanna River winding through the valley below. The combination of rolling Pennsylvania ridges, farmland, forest, and river views made this one of the most memorable overlooks I’ve experienced on the Appalachian Trail.
Why This Hike Will Always Be Special to Me

While the views alone make this hike worth doing, this section of the Appalachian Trail will always hold a special place in my heart.
On May 30, 2026, what started as another beautiful day on the trail became one of the most memorable days of my life when Jason surprised me with a proposal.
We stopped at an overlook for a snack break, and completely out of the blue, he pulled out a ring and asked me to marry him. Needless to say, the rest of the hike felt a little different after that.
This trail gave us incredible views, a great adventure, and a memory I’ll treasure forever.

If you’re looking for an Appalachian Trail hike that combines beautiful forest scenery, classic Pennsylvania rock formations, wildlife, historic AT landmarks, and breathtaking views of the Susquehanna River, the Peters Mountain to Clarks Ferry Trailhead section is an excellent choice.
Just remember to bring more water than you think you’ll need, wear good hiking shoes, and arrive early if you’re hoping to snag a parking spot on a busy weekend.
