What Makes Swatara State Park Special
Tucked in the heart of central Pennsylvania, Swatara State Park is one of those places that doesn’t scream for attention but absolutely earns it.
I’ve visited many times over the years, and what keeps bringing me back is the variety. One visit might be a peaceful walk along the rail trail. Another might be a hike through the woods, a stop at the historic Waterville Bridge, or simply spending time along the Swatara Creek.
What I love most is that the park never feels crowded or overly developed. It still feels like a place where you can slow down, enjoy nature, and discover something new every time you visit.
Whether you’re looking for an easy family outing, a bike ride, a scenic hike, or a quiet place to unwind, Swatara State Park has something to offer.

Trails: More Than You Bargained For (Trust Me)
Here’s a lesson I learned the hard way: don’t underestimate the trail system at Swatara State Park.
The first time I visited with my kids, what started as a casual walk somehow turned into a 7-mile adventure through the woods. We weren’t exactly lost—but let’s just say we ended up seeing a lot more of the park than we originally planned.
Looking back, it’s one of my favorite memories from Swatara.
If you’re visiting with younger children or just planning a shorter outing, I highly recommend downloading a trail map before you go.
The trail network is extensive and offers everything from easy walks to longer hikes through beautiful forest scenery. Mountain bikers will also find dedicated trails, making Swatara a great destination whether you’re looking for a leisurely stroll or a full day outdoors.
Don’t Miss: Bordner’s Cabin
One of my favorite hidden gems in Swatara State Park is Bordner’s Cabin.
Tucked deep in the woods, this rustic historic cabin feels like a step back in time. The first time I came across it, it felt like finding a secret piece of Pennsylvania history hidden among the trees.
It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down for a few minutes, take a few photos, and appreciate the people who lived and worked in this area long before the park existed.
If you’re exploring the longer trail sections, I definitely recommend adding Bordner’s Cabin to your route.

🥾The Appalachian Trail Connection
One of my favorite things about Swatara State Park is its connection to the Appalachian Trail.
If you’ve followed Always Sunny in PA for any length of time, you know the Appalachian Trail has become one of my favorite places to explore. While Swatara isn’t directly on the AT, it’s located just a short drive from several Pennsylvania Appalachian Trail access points, making it a great addition to any hiking weekend.
Over the past few years, I’ve explored some incredible Pennsylvania AT sections, including the scenic ridge walk from PA 183 to Route 501, the rewarding views at Kimmel Lookout, and the unforgettable Peters Mountain to Clarks Ferry hike along the Susquehanna River.
Whether you’re tackling a short day hike, chasing scenic overlooks, or simply curious about experiencing a small piece of the famous trail that stretches from Georgia to Maine, the Appalachian Trail is one of Pennsylvania’s greatest outdoor treasures.
For many hikers, the AT is a bucket-list adventure. For me, it’s become an ongoing journey—one Pennsylvania section at a time.

Tips Before You Go
- 📔 Love documenting your outdoor adventures? I created the Always Sunny in PA Pennsylvania Trail Journal as a fun way to keep track of favorite hikes, overlooks, wildlife sightings, waterfalls, and trail memories from adventures across Pennsylvania.
- 📍 Bring a map — I cannot stress this enough. What looked like a short afternoon walk somehow turned into a 7-mile adventure. Just ask my kids. 😆
- 🗺️ I recommend picking up the Appalachian Trail Pennsylvania Map before you go — essential for navigating the trails around Swatara!
- 🍎 Pack snacks and water, especially if you’re hiking with kids. I learned this lesson firsthand when a simple walk at Swatara turned into an accidental 7-mile adventure. We survived, made a great memory, and had plenty to laugh about later—but I was very grateful we had snacks along the way!
- 🥾 Good hiking boots are non-negotiable on Pennsylvania trails. I hike in my Columbia Hiking Boots on nearly every adventure, and they didn’t even complain during that accidental 7-mile Swatara hike.
- 🚗 Parking is free and accessible
- 🚵 Mountain bikers — check trail conditions before heading out, especially after rain
- 🌿 Best Seasons — Spring and Fall are my favorite times to visit. Spring brings wildflowers and flowing water, while Fall transforms the park with incredible foliage. Summer is beautiful too, but definitely pack bug spray.
- 🦟 Bug spray is non-negotiable on PA trails — we never hike without Sawyer Permethrin. Spray it on your clothes and gear before you go!
- 💧 The Swatara Creek — beautiful to walk along; keep an eye on kids near the water.
- 🌉 Don’t skip the historic Waterville Bridge. Even if you’re only making a quick visit to the park, it’s one of the most recognizable and photogenic landmarks in Swatara State Park.
